Alessandro Riberi’s Monument

This marble statue of surgeon and medical teacher Alessandro Riberi is a work by sculptor Giovanni Albertoni (1806-1887) and was finished in 18641. The statue is one of the Medical Monuments in the University of Turin central building and can be seen in a niche of the ground floor gallery (south side).

On the front side of the basament, we can read this inscription: “VASTA DOTTRINA / MENTE ACUTA. AMOR DELLA SCIENZA / BONTA’ D’ANIMO. FERMEZZA DI PROPOSITO / MANO SAPIENTE E FORTUNATA / DIERON CELEBRITA’ DI SOMMO CLINICO OPERATORE / SCRITTORE INSIGNE / RISTORATORE DELLE DISCIPLINE MEDICHE SUBALPINE / AD ALESSANDRO RIBERI / PROFESSORE DI CLINICA CHIRURGICA E DI MEDICINA OPERATIVA / AL QUALE AMICI AMMIRATORI DISCEPOLI / POSERO DOLENTI QUESTA MEMORIA / L’ANNO MDCCCLXI”.

On the back side, another inscription reads as follows: “NACQUE A STROPPO IL XVII D’APRILE / MDCCXCIV / MORI’ A TORINO IL XVIII DI NOVEMBRE / MDCCCLXI / MEDICO DI S.M. E DELLA R.FAMIGLIA / SENATORE DEL REGNO / PRESIDENTE DEL CONSIGLIO SUPERIORE / DI SANITA’ MILITARE / GRAND’UFFIZIALE / DELL’ORDINE DEI SS. MAURIZIO E LAZZARO / CAVALIERE E CONSIGLIERE / DELL’ORDINE CIVILE DI SAVOJA / SOCIO DELL’ACCADEMIA DELLE SCIENZE”.

On the lateral sides of the basament there are two bronze bas-reliefs representing Riberi taking care of a sick man and a child.
