This mobile iron lung was built in the 1950s by the Alvis Motor Company can be seen in The Science Museum in London (Exhibition Road). Iron lungs, especially during polio epidemics in the first half on 20th century, were built in car factories and some featured car parts. In this case, Alvis used their ‘Monza’ petrol cap, designed for racing cars, as the quick-release catch on the access port covers1.
