“Florence believed hospitals needed separate wings connected by corridors, known as the “pavilion style”. Wards needed windows positioned on opposite walls to allow natural cross-ventilation”1.
“This engraving shows St Thomas’ Hospital when it was opened by Queen Victoria in 1871. Florence approved of the pavilion-style design, but not the site”2.
This a letter from Florence to an architect in which “she recommends 32 bed per ward, the maximum number one nurse can supervise”3.
