Building Healthy Hospitals Showcase

This showcase in the Florence Nightingale Museum of London contains documents and plans related to influential Nightingale’s ideas about hospital design.

“Florence believed hospitals needed separate wings connected by corridors, known as the “pavilion style”. Wards needed windows positioned on opposite walls to allow natural cross-ventilation”1.

“This engraving shows St Thomas’ Hospital when it was opened by Queen Victoria in 1871. Florence approved of the pavilion-style design, but not the site”2.

This a letter from Florence to an architect in which “she recommends 32 bed per ward, the maximum number one nurse can supervise”3.
