First Liver Resection Memorial Tablet

This memorial tablet in the entrance hall of the Surgical Pavilion of the Policlinico Sant’Orsola-Malpighi in Bologna remembers that Italian surgeon Pietro Loreta was the first in performing a surgical procedure for liver resection in 1887.

The italian text reads as follows: “A / PIETRO LORETA / CHE PRIMO IDEO’ / E FELICEMENTE ESEGUI’ IL 26 AGOSTO 1887 / LA RESEZIONE DEL FEGATO / GLI STUDENTI DI MEDICINA E CHIRURGIA / DELL’ANNO 1888 – 89 / CON AFFETTO DI DISCEPOLI / CON ORGOGLIO D’ITALIANI / PONGONO / QUESTA MEMORIA”.
