Florence Nightingale’s Memorial

This marble monument to the memory of Florence Nightingale can be seen in the crypt of St Paul’s Cathedral, in London.

The central white marble bas-relief represents Miss Nightingale while offering a glass of water to a sick man. On the superior part of the coloured marble frame this evangelical sentence can be read: “BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL”. On the bottom part, her name with the dates of birth and death: “FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE O[rder of].M[erit] / BORN MAY 12TH 1820. DIED AUGUST 13TH 1910”.

This is not her tomb. Florence Nightingale is buried in her family tomb in East Wellow, Hampshire.
