Foster’s almshouses were founded by John Foster in 1483 in Bristol. He was a Bristol merchant and Mayor. The almshouse were completely rebuilt in 1880-83. The architect designed it in the flamboyant French Gothic Revival style with turrets and tall brick chimneys. The street in front of the building was also reconstructed and the old narrow, dark and aptly-named Steep Street became the wider and more upmarket Colston Street.1
