Giovanni Canestrini’s Bust

This bust of Giovanni Canestrini is located in Trento (Piazza Dante gardens). In 1901, after his death, the Trentino Company Students decided to honor Canestrini putting a memorial tablet on his home in Revò. This tribute, regarded as an anti-religious act, was strongly resisted by the city, so the Student Company decided to erect a bust in Trento instead of putting the tablet. The bronze bust of the scientist was realized by the sculptor Andrea Malfatti and inaugurated on September 14, 1902. The Italian inscription reads as follows: “A/ GIOVANNI CANESTRI/ PRIMO APOSTOLO IN ITALIA/ DELLA TEORIA DARWINIANA/ ESEMPIO NOBILISSIMO/ DI GENIALITÁ/ E DI CORAGGIO SCIENTIFICO/ LA SOCIETÁ STUDENTI TRENTINI/ XVI SETTEMBRE MCMII”.
