Napoleon Iii Visitant Les Blesses De Montebello by Jules Rig

This big oil-on-canvas painting by Jules Rigo is titled “Napoleon III visitant les blessés de Montebello à l’ambulance de Voghera durant la campagne d’Italie” (Napoleon III visiting the wounded in the Voghera ambulance after Montebello battle during the campaign of Italy) and can be seen (as item N°163) in the “Medical Chain of Evacuation” section of the Musée du Service de Santé des Armées in Paris. The painting represents Army’s surgeon-in-chief Hippolyte Larrey while introducing the wounded to the Emperor; afterwards, Napoleon III ordered to release Austrian surgeons, someway prefiguring the First Geneva Convention of 18641.
