Roentgen’s House In Giessen

Wilhelm Conrad Rõntgen‘s house is located in Südanlage 17, 35390 Gießen, near the Theaterpark area. Nearby, we can also find the Röntgen monument within the Theaterpark, as well as Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s tomb at the Old Cemetery (Alter Friedhof).

As specified in the commemorative tablet on the façade of the bulding, this house is one of the places where the physicist and Nobel Prize laureate lived from 1879-1885, during his tenure as Professor of Physics at the University of Gießen (1879-1888). The research carried out during his Gießen years contributed to his subsequent discovery of X-rays in 1895. Röntgen’s House and the nearby Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s Monument and University buildings, embody the formative period in which Röntgen grew as a physicist, researcher and teacher.

The German inscription on the below commemorative tablet reads as follows in English:
“Here Dr. Phil. Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen lived from 1879 to 1885,
Professor of Physics, discoverer of the rays named after him.
Born 27 March 1845 in Lennep, died 10 February 1923 in Munich.”
