The Anatomy Building and Bridge

This building in Campo San Giacomo da l’Orio hosted for more than a century the anatomical theatre of Venice for the regular dissection of cadavers by the local Collegio Medico-Chirurgico. It was inaugurated in 1671 and was used until 1800, when a fire completely destroyed it. Despite some projects to remake it, the theatre was never rebuilt inside the building and the anatomical dissections were moved elsewhere. On the facade, the following Latin inscription can still be read: “D.O.M. / MEDICORUM PHYSICORUM / COLLEGIUM”.

This function of the building is also remembered by the toponym of the nearby bridge still called today Ponte de l’anatomia (anatomy bridge).
