The Beheading of Dymphna by Godfried Maes

Picture of the painting depicting the beheading of Dymphna (Onthoofding van de H. Dimpna) by Godfried Maes (1649 – 1700), located inside the Saint Dymphna’s Church in Geel. Also in this case, as in the Wooden Altarpiece by Jan Van Wavere, the representation of Dymphna’s father in the guise of a Saracen (i.e. in the guise of the traditional enemy of Christians) occurs, although the clothes of a seventh century Irish pagan king should be very different.
