Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen’s Tomb

The Old Cemetery (Alter Friedhof) in Licher Straße 29, 35394 Geißen (Hesse) is the final resting place of Wilhelm Conrad Rõntgen (1845-1923), who discovered X-radiation in 1895, and was the first Nobel Prize winner for Physics in 1901.

The family grave is marked by a simple standing stone inscribed with his name and those of his parents, Friedrich Conrad Röntgen (1801-1884) and Constance Charlotte Röntgen, née Frowein (1806-1880), and his wife, Bertha Röntgen, née Ludwig (1839-1919).

This quiet family memorial is befitting to the nature of this modest and diligent scientist, whose landmark discovery illuminated – both literally and figuratively – the fields of medicine and physics alike.
