Angelo Celli and Anna Fraentzel’s Tomb

Angelo Celli, one of the most important malariologists of the nineteenth century, who contributed to eradicate malaria from the Agro Romano, died in Monza on the 2nd of November 1914. According to his will he was buried in Frascati municipal cemetery, on a small height, as to “face eternally from up there the beneficient work carried out throughout his industrious existence”1. Anna Fraentzel, Celli’s wife and colleague, is buried just close to the beloved husband.

The tomb is located in the historical area of the cemetery on a small height from which it’s possible to enjoy a wonderful panorama of the Agro Romano.

Until the 2010s, on the tomb it was possible to read the following words:

“LE SPOGLIE MORTALI / DI / ANGELO CELLI / FURONO PER DESIDERIO DI LUI / DISPOSTE QUI IN COSPETTO / DELL’AGRO ROMANO / A MEMORIA / DELL’OPERA REDENTRICE CHE EGLI DIEDE / DONDE. / AL SEPOLCRO DELLO SCIENZIATO PROVVIDO / SALGONO VOCI DI MEMORI AFFLITTI / E SOSPIRI DI DESOLATI RIMPIANTI / 1857-1914”.

Now (2025), the inscription on a new memorial tombstone reads as folows:

“PROF. ANGELO CELLI / 1857 – 1914 / ILLUSTRE SCIENZIATO / FULGIDO ESEMPIO DI MEDICO / NELLA LOTTA ALLA MALARIA / BENEFATTORE DELL’UMANITA’ / CITTADINO ONORARIO / DI FRASCATI QUI SEPOLTO / PER SUA VOLONTA'”.
