The celebration of the Arbor Day (Festa degli Alberi) was introduced in Italy in 1898 by renowned physician Guido Baccelli, then Minister of Education. The first trees were planted along the ancient Via Latina, in Rome.
A memorial stone can still be seen near the entrance of the Archeological area of the Tombs of Via Latina (Via dell’Arco di Travertino, 151). The Italian inscription reads as follows: “GLI ALUNNI / DELLA SCUOLA TECNICA / PIETRO DELLA VALLE / PIANTARONO 1200 [ or I 200? ] PINI / IN ONORE DI / GUIDO BACCELLI / [A]PRILE 1900″.
