Portrait De Jules Bordet 1950 by Paul Delvaux

This “Portrait de Jules Bordet” by Belgian surrealist painter Paul Delvaux was asked in 1950 by Albert Claude when he was appointed a scientific director of the Institut Jules Bordet1. The portrait – protected by a glass – can now be admired on a wall of the entrance hall of the Institute, in Brussels (121 Boulevard de Waterloo).

In the little bronze plaque below the painting, these French words can be read: “JULES BORDET / 13 JUIN 1870 _ 6 AVRIL 1961 / UNIVERSITE LIBRE DE BRUXELLES / PROFESSEUR DE BACTERIOLOGIE _ 1907 _ 1935 / DIRECTEUR: INSTITUT PASTEUR DU BRABANT _ 1900 _ 1940 / PRIX NOBEL DE MEDECINE 1919”.
