Rahel Hirsch Bust

This bronze bust of Rahel Hirsch is located in the Charité, Berlin. She was a German female doctor and professor of medicine at the Charité medical school. She was the first woman in the Kingdom of Prussia to obtain the title of professor in the field of medicine. The monument was designed by the German sculptor Susanne Wehland. Hirsch is represented with a funnel body; a single hand of the woman is also part of the monument, along traces of test tubes. These elements refer to her role of scientist. It can be noted a foot coming out from the sculpture, as a metaphor of the beginning of a new women’s role in this field.1
