Giovanni Manzolini’s Wax Bust

This quite impressive wax portrait of anatomist and wax-modeller Giovanni Manzolini was made by his wife and colleague Anna Morandi Manzolini and can be seen – along with the self-portrait of Anna – in the anatomical wax section of the Science and Art Museums of Palazzo Poggi in Bologna (via Zamboni 33).

“Morandi sculpted her husband’s bust to show him dissecting a human heart – a subversion of the usual dichotomy of the day associating reason with men and emotion with women”1. (In her own self-portrait Morandi is dissecting a brain).
