The old Scuola Convitto “Principessa Jolanda” in Milan (via Sassi, 4) was one of the first boarding schools of nursing in Italy.
It was founded in 1912, simultaneously to a little hospital specifically designed for the training of the nurses, on the initiative, among others, of Sita Meyer Camperio. The school and the hospital were run by the Italian Red Cross until 1996. The first Matron of the school was Helen Ruth Hamilton, a direct pupil of Florence Nightingale and former sister at the King’s Hospital in London.
Today only an almost illegible marble memorial tablet on the facade of the original building of the school remembers to the wayfarer its glorious history. Under the symbol of the Red Cross the Italian inscrIption reads as follows: “C.R.I. / OSPEDALE / PRINCIPESSA / JOLANDA / SCUOLA CONVITTO / INFERMIERE”.
