The Lazzaretto Hall

It is possible to enter into the Lazzaretto hall by a staircase in the central courtyard of the Santa Maria della Pace’s hospital in Naples; it is called “of the Leprosarium” as lepers and plague victims were welcomed in it, when needed.

At the end of the hall, a fine altar separates the Leprosarium from the area that once was intended as a medical cabinet (where is located the Mariano Semmola’s memorial tablet).

Along the walls, half-height, runs a gallery through which food and beverages were lowered to patients to prevent contagion.
