Lazzaro Spallanzani’s Monument

In the main square of his native town Scandiano, a big bronze monument has been erected to the memory of Lazzaro Spallanzani. The monument, by sculptor Guglielmo Fornaciari from Reggio Emilia, was inaugurated the 21th October 18881. The scientist is watching a frog through a magnifier with a real glass. On the four sides of the granite basament there are the following inscriptions: “A / LAZZARO SPALLANZANI”; “NATO A SCANDIANO / MDCCXXIX”; “MORTO A PAVIA / MDCCIC”; “XXI OTTOBRE MDCCCLXXXVIII”.
