In 1890, Guido Baccelli decided to decorate the tympanun on the facade of the building of the Clinica medica in his Policlinico Umberto I, Rome, with a big marble bas-relief in honor of Giovanni Battista Morgagni.
The government commission chaired by Baccelli decided that the monument should represent “Giovanni Battista Morgagni while teaching his disciples the search for the locations and causes of diseases. Morgagni must be represented as the founder of the naturalistic method and not as a sector of corpses”1.
