This Tambour Sphygmograph (c. 1880) can be seen in a showcase of The Science and Art of Medicine gallery – a part of The Science Museum in London (Exhibition Road). It is an evolution of the sphygmograph invented by Etienne Jules Marey c. 1860. It was placed on the wrist and the movement of the pulse was transmitted through the rubber diaphragm. A lever attached to this recorded the pulse contraction on smoked paper1.
