Thomas Spencer Wells Tomb

The mortal remains of Thomas Spencer Wells are buried in his family tomb in Brompton Cemetery, London (Old Brompton Road).

“By 1896 Wells’ health was deteriorating although he was still to be seen in London. In November with two of his daughters he went to the South of France. While at Cap d’Antibes on 31st January 1897 he was seized with an apoplexy and died in a few hours. He was three days short of his seventy-ninth birthday. On 8th February he was cremated at Woking and his ashes were laid to rest in the Brompton Cemetery”1.

The tomb is not easy to find (see link to the Map below) and the inscriptions on it are almost unreadable. Anyway, you can guess: “THOMAS / SPENCER WELLS / BARONET / BORN FEB 3 1818 / DIED JAN 31 1897 / HE REVIVED THE OPERATION OF OVARIOTAMY [sic!]”.
