The Advance of Neurology by Mary Harris Filer 1954

This mural painting named “The Advance of Neurology” can be admired in a meeting room on the ground floor of the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital in Montreal. It was painted in 1954 by Canadian artist Mary Harris Filer and unveiled by the then Prime Minister of Quebec, Maurice Duplessis, on November 14 of the same year1. It represents the most eminent figures in the history of Neurology.

The names mainly inscribed in the upper part of the painting are more or less the same as in the entrance hall of the Institute: Alois Alzheimer, Claude Bernard, Jean-Martin Charcot, Harvey Cushing, Wilhelm Erb, Camillo Golgi, Victor Horsley, John Hughlings Jackson, Constantin von Monakow, Franz Nissl, Ivan Pavlov, Santiago Ramon y Cajal, Charles Scott Sherrington and Silas Weir Mitchell. Moreover, we can read the names of Hippocrates and of William Osler.
