This big wooden box represents The Hospital Chest of St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London and can be seen in the hospital’s Museum.
“The Order of the Hospital, first printed in 1552, stated that there should be ‘one fayre and substanciall chest’ in which to keep the Hospital’s records. The chest was to have three locks, and the president, treasurer and one other governor of the Hospital were each to have a key”1.
