Xavier Bichat’s Birthplace

Xavier Bichat was born in this house of Thoirette (10, rue Xavier Bichat) on 14 November 1771. The memorial tablet on the entrance door was unveiled on October 27, 1833, by the Société d’émulation du Jura. In 1931, the house was purchased by Maurice Genty (1886-1961), the physician librarian of the Académie de médecine, who had later transformed it into a museum, also collecting some memories of Bichat himself. The house is now a private property and is not accessible to the public¹.
