Old Ospedale Maggiore Disappeared

The original site of the Ospedale Maggiore of Bologna (via Riva di Reno, 52) was inaugurated on June 2, 1725, and, almost a century later, the medieval Ospedale della Vita and Ospedale della Morte merged into it. Sadly, the heavy bombings of July 24, 1943 irreversibly destroyed the entire complex. Only the marble lunette on the entrance door, inaugurated in 1902, was saved and can be seen today at the foot of the access ramp to the new Ospedale Maggiore1.
