Antonio Cardarelli’s Commemorative Plaque

This is one of the plaques dedicated to Antonio Cardarelli. It is affixed on the facade of the City Hall of Civitanova del Sannio, his hometown.
The plaque is particulary important and very interesting because of its content.

The words carved out on the marble plate are: “ANTONIO CARDARELLI / CON QUEL SENNO E CUORE DI MEDICO ILLUSTRE / ONDE ITALIA ONORA / SEPPE / NELLA CARESTIA DEL 1879 / TENER LONTANI / I TERRORI E GLI STRAZI DELLA FAME / DA QUANTI ERANO INFELICI / IN QUESTA DILETTISSIMA TERRA NATIA / LA CITTADINANZA RICONOSCENTE / 1880”

The whole population thanks him for the precious and charitable help he gave to needy people and to the entire village during the terrible famine of 1879.
