This marble monument of Alessandro Volta was erected in Como (Piazza Alessandro Volta) in 1838. The statue was sculpted by renowned Italian artist Pompeo Marchesi, while the massive base is a work by Francesco Durelli1. The scientist holds a book in his left hand and rests the right one on his famous pile.
On the front side of the base there is the following Italian inscription: “A VOLTA / LA PATRIA / A MDCCCXXXVIII”. On the posterior and lateral sides many of its scientific instruments are sculpted in bas-relief.
In the middle of a flower bed in front of the monument two bronze memorial tablets can be seen dating back to 1899, the centennial of the invention of the pile.
