Hildegard’s Baptistry

The church in Bermersheim vor der Höhe is a building of very ancient origin, probably dating back to at least the first millennium. In medieval times, it was closely linked to the local feudal lordship and, according to tradition, may be the place where Hildegard of Bingen was baptised.

Over the centuries, the building has undergone destruction and transformation, yet has retained its religious function. Since the Reformation, it has been a bi-denominational church, used by both the Catholic and Protestant communities, and is dedicated to Saint Martin, a saint typically associated with Frankish settlements.
