Shortly after Justinus’s death in February 1862, a committee was formed in Weinsberg to erect a memorial in his honour. According to the chronicle of Professor Dr. Richard Meissner, the initial plan was to erect the memorial at the castle, but Justinus’s son Theobald objected. He instead chose a location opposite the Kerner House for his father’s memorial and purchased the property.

The monument was created according to plans by Professor August von Beyer and features a relief portrait of Justinus Kerner by the sculptor Professor Eduard Herdtle. It was ceremonially unveiled on October 18, 1865. At that time, it stood (unlike today) on a pedestal with a staircase leading up to it. Later, Theobald Kerner had two bronze plaques added. One plaque bears a poem by August Köstlin, the other an award bestowed upon Justinus Kerner on the occasion of his 50th doctoral anniversary1.
