Otto Fritz Meyerhof’s Memorial Tablet

This commemorative tablet remembering Otto Fritz Meyerhof is located on the facade of a building in the center of Hanover, close to the opera house and the historic core of the city (RathenaustraĂŸe).

It consists of an urban commemorative plaque (Stadttafel) installed by the municipality to mark the scientist’s birthplace. The present building stands on the site where Meyerhof was born in 1884.

The German inscription reads as follows in English:
“Otto Meyerhof was born here. Winner of the Nobel Prize for medicine 1922 together with A. Hill, for research into carbohydrate metabolism and energy processes in muscle. One of the great biochemists of 20th century. The family moved to Berlin shortly after his birth. Emigrated in 1938, first to Paris and later to the USA. Propagated the philosophy of Leonard Nelson. Died in Philadelphia/USA.”
