At Bahnhofstraße 7, in Marburg, there is this permanent exhibition titled “Blood is a very special juice – On the life and work of Emil von Behring.”, which serves as the intellectual and narrative entry point to the historical walking tour dedicated to Behring’s legacy.1.
Designed with clarity and depth, the display uses original photographs, documents, and narrative panels to offer insight into the scientific and human dimensions of his work. It offers a comprehensive presentation of his life, beginning with his early years and medical education, and continuing through to his groundbreaking development of serum therapy for diphtheria and tetanus—an achievement that earned him the very first Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1901.
The exhibition also delves into Behring’s role as an entrepreneur, particularly through his founding of the The Behringwerke GmbH, a pharmaceutical enterprise that played a central role in establishing Marburg as a hub for medical research and industry. In addition to his scientific and business endeavors, the exhibit touches on his civic engagement and the influence he had on the social and political fabric of Marburg in the early 20th century. Designed with clarity and depth, the display uses original photographs, documents, and narrative panels to offer insight into the scientific and human dimensions of his work.
It is considered the 2nd “station” of the Behring route.
