At Ketzerbach 11, in Marburg, there is a building that highlights the role of Emil von Behring beyond his work as a scientist: it addresses his entrepreneurial and business activities, and how he engaged in business networks both within Germany and internationally.
It underscores that the scientific breakthroughs had a business dimension: scaling production, establishing companies (such as his serum and vaccine production), and connecting Marburg to global markets. The Behringwerke with the production of tetanus serum, tuberculin, bovovaccine, diphtheria serum etc. became an international supplier. Despite Behring’s interest in creating a commercial reality, it was only after Behring’s death that the ‘Behringwerke Aktiengesellschaft’ began to function and the business center was moved in the 1920s to Marburg. It is considered the 4th station of the Behring route.1.
