In 1895, Emil von Behring became Director of this Institute of Hygiene in Marburg (Pilgrimstein 2). His position included giving lectures in hygiene and in the history of medicine. In 1896, the Marburg Institute of Hygiene moved to a building on a road nearby Pilgrimstein Road, previously the Surgery Clinic.

Behring divided the Institute into two departments: a Research Department for Experimental Therapy and a Teaching Department for Hygiene and Bacteriology, where he lectured on smallpox, plague, cholera, diphteria, etc. New apparatus and instruments for his researches also arrived. He remained Director of the Institute until his retirement as professor in May 1916. The Institute of hygiene is now part of Philipps-Universität Marburg and it is considered the third station of the Behring route.1.
