Portrait Of The Three Regentesses Of The Leprozenhuis Amster

The Portrait of the Three Regentesses of the Leprozenhuis, Amsterdam by Ferdinand Bol is a group portrait representing three regentesses of the leper colony of Amsterdam, painted c. 1668. The painting is on display in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

The work depicts three women – Clara Abba, Elisabeth van Duynen, and Agatha Munter – who were responsible for administering the Leprozenhuis, the lepers’ asylum (a charitable institution) in Amsterdam.

The women are seated around a low table draped with a richly patterned cloth. Their elegant clothing reflects both their social status and the sober dignity expected of their office.

On the table are objects such as a cash book, an inkwell, coins, and a quill pen, alluding to their administrative duties: keeping accounts and managing the institution’s finances.
