The hospital was built by the order of Sultan Abdülmecid to establish a hospital near the Selimiye Barracks. Its construction began in 1844, and by 1846, it started providing patient care with a capacity of 750 beds.

During the Crimean War of 1853-1854, the hospital was allocated for the treatment of wounded and sick soldiers. In 1870, it became the hospital where graduates of the Military Medical School (Askeri Tıbbiye) completed a two-year internship before being assigned to their units. It continued this function until the establishment of Gülhane in 1898.

In 1891, a school was opened within the hospital to train surgeons and pharmacists.

In 1907, a X-ray department was established within the hospital. The X-ray machine operated using electricity generated by a special motor.

During the War of Independence, hospital staff supported the effort by providing doctors and medical supplies to Anatolia.

Over time, the hospital continued to develop, and on October 1, 1985, it was restructured under the name “Gülhane Military Medical Academy Haydarpaşa Training Hospital.”

In 2016, the hospital was transferred from the military to the Ministry of Health.
