Museum Am Strom

The Rhine Historical Museum showcases the cultural and historical heritage of Bingen am Rhein and the Middle Rhine Valley. This area is closely linked to the 19th-century Rhine Romanticism, which influenced art, literature, music and political history, as well as fostering the development of tourism.

The museum building, constructed in 1898 and listed as a historic monument, reflects the technological enthusiasm of the Gründerzeit. Originally a power station, it still retains characteristic features such as the large machine room, the neo-Gothic windows and the ceiling structure, which evoke a ‘cathedral of progress’. Following its restoration and conversion into a museum, it retains visible traces of its industrial past and is now the westernmost point on the Rhine-Main Industrial Heritage Route.

The largest section of the museum is dedicated to Hildegard of Bingen. The exhibition aims to place her as a historical figure within the context of 12th-century society. The tour is complemented by a garden within the museum, where the medicinal plants described in her works on natural history are cultivated.
