Thermal Springs Of As Burgas

As Burgas is a group of thermal springs located in the historic center of Ourense (Rúa As Burgas), with origins dating back to Roman times. Archaeological excavations have uncovered remains of a 1st-century AD sacred pool, along with numerous votive stones dedicated to Revve Anabaraego, a local deity believed to inhabit the springs and to be responsible for their healing properties. Over time, the Romans built a balneum (bathhouse) next to the sanctuary, a place not only for bathing but also for socializing and discussing daily affairs. Remains of this ancient thermal complex can still be seen1.

Today, As Burgas mainly consist of two springs: Burga de Arriba and Burga de Abaixo. Burga de Arriba dates back to the 17th century and is the older of the two. Burga de Abaixo features a neoclassical design attributed to the master builder Trillo in the 19th century. It is characterized by two side spouts and a carved basin, topped by the city’s coat of arms.2

On one side lies the Fervedoiro, a square pool where the water can be seen bubbling due to its high temperature.

The water that flows from these springs emerges at temperatures above 60°C. According to analyses carried out in 1990 by Doctors María Generosa Souto Figueroa and Francisco Bermejo Martínez, it is rich in minerals such as bicarbonate, sodium, and silica. These components are believed to give the water therapeutic properties, traditionally used to help relieve conditions such as rheumatism, skin disorders, and respiratory problems3.
